Weekend Watchdog

The conventions are behind us, and as the balloons and confetti are swept up, it's time for for the watchdog to make its weekend rounds. The Sunday show line-up particularly interesting this week, both because of the names you see and the names you don't see.

At least one politician who made a big splash this week isn't taking any questions for a while, but there's lots of time to study (and time for tutoring) on the way home for all the questions to come on the campaign trail. In the meantime, we'll have to make do with the line-up we've got.

From the People Who Brought You Misery...

Do you remember the "misery index" that became an iconic feature of the economic debates in the late 1970s and 1980? Well, it's back and it's bad—worse than it has been in more than 17 years. Progressives fighting to restore our values in this country must seize upon the increase in political engagement and energy that Obama has inspired, to meet our agenda for those tangibles that our values require. more »

When did lawful dissent become "terror"

truthout.orgMarcus Washington hit with pepper spraySo here it is America, vegetarians and left wing groups have been defined in the policies of the FBI and the state as suitable candidates for observation, surveillance, illegal arrest and detention. The security paradigm has changed.

The Mugabe tactics in Zimbabwe are here on your streets, now, at the hands of the state. The darkness is coming.

Carpe Dial

Barack Obama’s seven year-old daughter, Sasha, said “Hi, Daddy” to his big-screen image after mother Michelle Obama’s speech to the Democratic convention in Denver. It was a humanizing moment, those two words perhaps doing more than her mother’s speech to make Obama accessible to voters. more »
