It would be easy to move from economic despondency to political despair: The tremendous difficulty of passing even a six-month extension in bare bones unemployment insurance has convinced many analysts that additional federal job creation measures are off the table. But why not call Republicans’ bluff and try to fund specific job creation measures with tax increases the American people support?

But we are not nearly so divided on issues of public policy as the typical media reports of a country divided by red and blue might lead us to believe. In fact, there’s broad bipartisan support for a range of progressive policies.
