These Giants May Fall: Deadbeat Auto Execs Jet Into Storm

Related Topics:

mayfield.co.nz — In a classic case of insensitivity two of the auto execs flew in on private jets, old habits die hard. One of the Senators in the hearing picked up on this and asked if they had considered downgrading to First Class. It was a well deserved moment of barbed sarcasm, not lost on the three, as the Senator communicated his anger and frustration...

(Card) Check Please

I have long been amused by certain bizarre conservative rallying cries. This past election I noticed a new catch phrase. The minute a conservative breathes the word "card check," his or her supporters completely lose their minds. But where does the passion come from? more »

Free Fall

"The era of big government is over" is over. A major recovery program—featuring substantial public investment—will be inevitably the first initiative of the Obama administration. It should feature more spending than tax cuts—investing in renewable energy and conservation, in rebuilding everything from schools to bridges to a smart electric gird, in helping cities and states avoid crippling cuts of services, in keeping college affordable, providing health care to children, and aiding those most in need.

Citigroup To Cut 50,000 Jobs

mayfield.co.nz — Citigroup CEO Chuck Prince resigned with a reported payoff package worth $US 38 million after the company was forced to write down billions of dollars of mortgage backed assets accumulated under his directorship. Latest reports put the figure at a staggering $US 64 Billion.

It is unlikely those laid off will receive similar severance deals.

AIG Execs Caught Partying Again in Phoenix Luxury Resort

triphow.com — And so it goes... This is how US Taxpayers bailout money is being used.

"...In spite of efforts by AIG to keep the retreat underwraps, ABC15 sniffed it out and found the execs staying at the casitas at the resort, enjoying poolside meetings, spa workouts, and spending $400 at a restaurant on meals and drinks..."

Change we definitely need!

Stickin' It To The Unions

There's a lot of discussion about what to do about the auto companies and none of the options are very palatable. In today's New York Times there is an article analyzing the bailout vs bankruptcy talk that's starting to emerge. I don't have an opinion on that except to the extent this is used as an excuse to destroy the unions. And that is certainly the theme that's emerging from the right. more »

Health Care and Common Sense: HR676

Of course, the plan Kennedy refers to in his recent Washington Post article is one like that proposed by Health Care for America Now, which is the one that overwhelmingly has dominated the articles of CAF's writers and which is presently being supported by Obama.

One of the many flaws in that proposed plan is that it is a needs based program, which makes it kind of like a welfare program: more »

The Center-Left Nation

Sure, this is a center-right country, but only if you substitute addition for analysis. There are more conservatives than liberals — as there has been for years. So add them to the 44% of the electorate that says they are "moderates," and you get a center-right majority. But do a little analysis. "Moderate" isn't a place holder, as voters who describe themselves that way have attitudes on the issues of the day. And when you look at attitudes, rather than addition, there is no question: Conservatives have had their day. This is a center-left, not a center-right nation. more »

Forked Tongues

I have been struggling since the election to write the big piece about "what it all means" but others here and elsewhere have said it all so eloquently that I've been stymied. It goes without saying that Barack Obama's win is a great victory for racial progress, and there is no doubt that the country has finally awakened from its post 9-11 trance. But what does it all mean for progressivism? I honestly don't know yet. The contours of this victory are still amorphous to me. I'm watching it unfold with excited interest and hope.

It's much more obvious to me what has changed for the right considering their epic fall from grace--- absolutely nothing. This is because in their minds they didn't actually lose --- liberalism did. more »
