Whoa! Even Romney's Scripted Binder Story Was A Lie!

In the debate Mitt Romney heartily endorsed Affirmative Action, claiming he sought out "binders full of women" that he could put in high positions. And it turns out that even that was a lie. Sheesh.

In the second presidential debate Tuesday Mitt Romney came prepared with ammunition in case issues of equality in the workplace for women was brought up. Romney said, "I had the chance to pull together a Cabinet, and all the applicants seemed to be men," he said. "I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks?' and they brought us whole binders full of women."

So now the facts are beginning to emerge. And once again the facts differ from what Romney said.

According to Maria Cardona writing at CNN,

A study by the University of Massachusetts and the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy shows that the percentage of women in senior positions during his tenure actually declined. It went from 30% when Romney took office to 27% when he left and up to more than 33% after the new governor took over.

Again: The percentage of women in senior positions went down under Romney. Romney undermined the gains women had made.

But Wait There's More

Turns out that Romney didn't even ask aides to look for qualified women as he said in his prepared statement at the debate, women's groups brought the binders to him. He did not go to a number of women's groups as he claimed. He did not ask for the binders. They came to him, he did not seek them out.

He just plain lied about it, in an attempt to get votes from women.

But Wait There's More

Before Romney was elected governor he ran a company called Bain Capital. And what was his record on women there? The Boston Globe looked into this, in Fact check: Romney’s record of hiring women,

Romney, however, did not have a history of appointing women to high-level positions in the private sector. Romney did not have any women partners as CEO of Bain Capital during the 1980s and 1990s.

The venture capital and private equity fields were male-dominated, to be sure, especially during Romney’s time.

No women, male-dominated.

But wait, it gets even worse. At Huffington Post, Christina Wilkie writes in, Mitt Romney On Women At Bain: They Don't Want To Work There,

In 1994, when Romney challenged the late Sen. Edward Kennedy in Massachusetts, the Boston Globe first raised the question of why there were so few women and minorities employed at Bain Capital Partners, the Boston-based private equity group Romney founded. At the time, all 95 vice presidents of the firm were white, and only nine were women.

All white, only 9 women out of 95. (Bain still all white, by the way, no Hispanic or African Americans.)

And as for those "binders of women" Romney said he asked for?

But as Romney revealed Tuesday night, eight years after Kennedy's brutal attack, Romney still hadn't met or worked with enough women to prepare him to staff the governor's office with capable people.

"It's shocking to me that after 25 years of experience at the very highest levels of corporate America, Mitt Romney needed our help [to find qualified women]," Jesse Mermell, one of the women who helped prepare the "binders full of women" told HuffPost's Jen Bendery on Wednesday.

Romney's 2nd, 3rd and 4th Biggest Debate Lies

Earlier I pointed out Romney biggest debate lie: Obama did not "double the deficit" he cut it by almost 1/3. Here are three more big Romney debate lies.

1) Unemployment rate. Obama promised to bring unemployment down to 5.4%. This is another lie -- Obama never promised this. USA Today's Debate Fact Check explains:

Claim: Romney said Obama said unemployment would be 5.4% by now.

Facts: Two economists who would soon join the Obama administration issued a report in early January 2009 – before Obama's inauguration – predicting that an economic stimulus plan would prevent unemployment from rising above 8% and would push it down to about 5.4% by the third quarter of 2012. However, the economists underestimated the severity of the recession. Even without the stimulus, they forecast in that report that the jobless rate would be 5.9% by now.

Last year, the Commerce Department said the slump was far worse than it had estimated, with the economy contracting almost 9% in the fourth quarter of 2008 and 5.3% in the first quarter of 2009.

2. Number of People Working. ROMNEY: “We have fewer people working today than we had when the president took office.” The Nation explains, in Romney’s Seven Biggest Debate Lies,

This is flatly false. The Bureau of Labor statistics just revised estimates from March 2011 to March 2012 upwards by 386,000 jobs—meaning that Obama crossed the magic imaginary barrier of net job creation for his term, and has actually created a net positive 125,000 jobs. This is a simple fact. And there have been 868,000 jobs created in the private sector during this time, which have been offset by public sector job losses—something Mitt Romney would like to see continue.

Moreover, this is an awful tough metric to judge Obama on in the first place. As he’s fond of mentioning, the economy was hemorrhaging 800,000 jobs a month when he took office—so holding him to a net job creation standard means he has to make up for those massive losses that were out of his control entirely. But he’s still done it.

This is so important to understand. When Obama took office we were losing more than 800,000 jobs per month. The stimulus completely turned that around. This chart says it all:

When Romney talks about jobs lost under Obama, he is talking about the left side of that chart, when the country was still suffering from the Bush crash! And just look at the tremendous difference the stimulus made, just completely turning things around!

3. Half of College Kids Unemployed. ABC News, Debate Fact Check: The Presidential Debate clears this one up,

ROMNEY: With half of college kids graduating this year, without a college - excuse me - without a job and without a college level job, that's just not acceptable."

ABC's Z. Byron Wolf has the facts:

Youth unemployment is far lower than 50 percent.

... The unemployment rate for the young, just like it has more broadly, has fallen in the U.S. Back when the study was conducted, the unemployment rate for those from 20-24 was about 16 percent. In data for September it was 12.4 percent.

The unemployment rate for college graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher was 6.3 percent in September, down from 8.1 percent at the same time last year.

Lie after lie after lie...

What Was Romney's Biggest, Flatest-Outest Debate Lie? "Obama Doubled The Deficit"

Mitt Romney said a lot of "sketchy" things in Tuesday night's debate. He again and again said jobs were lost under Obama, when all of that happened right after Obama took office and before the stimulus turned things around. He said "government does not create jobs" after earlier saying that he wants to hire teachers (after saying a while back he wants to fire them). But I think the biggest, flatest-outest lie Romney told was when he said - more than once - that Obama "doubled the deficit." Just wow.

The US budget fiscal year goes from October 1 to September 30 of the following year. On the day that President Obama took office the 2009 budget year -- Bush's last budget year -- was in its 5th month. The projected deficit for that budget year -- again, Bush's last budget year -- was already $1.2 trillion. Click that link, and look at the date that article was published. Check the date on this one. Or this one from a conservative news outlet with the slogan: "The Right News. Right Now." It is dated January 7, 2009, two weeks before Barack Obama took office, and the title is Congressional Budget Office Projects $1.2 Trillion Deficit for 2009,

The federal budget deficit will hit an unparalleled $1.2 trillion for the 2009 budget year, according to a Capitol Hill aide briefed on new Congressional Budget office figures.

That was two weeks before Obama took office. That is the first of "four straight trillion-dollar deficits" upon which Romney is basing much of his campaign rhetoric. Except it was Bush's last budget year, not Obama's first.

The third budget year of Obama's presidency just ended two weeks ago. The deficit was $1.1 trillion. That is not "double" as Romney claimed, it is lower than when he took office. Here is Reuters reporting on it: Federal deficit shrinks, still tops $1T in fiscal 2012

The federal budget deficit for the just-ended 2012 fiscal year shrank by $207 billion from the prior year, but still marked its fourth straight year above $1 trillion, Congress' budget referee estimated on Friday.

The deficit equaled about 7 percent of U.S. economic output, down from 8.7 percent in 2011, 9 percent in 2010 and 10.1 percent in 2009...

Got that? The deficit dropped from 10.1% of GDP in the 2009 budget year -- Bush's last budget year -- to 7% in the 2012 budget year. That is not "double," that is a 30% drop.

But Mitt Romney says, again and again, that Obama "doubled the deficit." No, he didn't, he reduced it.

The Latest Lie(s): Everything In The New Romney Ad

A new Romney ad claims ... OK, wow, just watch the ad:

OK, wow.

"Who will raise taxes on the middle class? Barack Obama and the liberals already have."

"Government-run health care"

"You'll pay higher taxes and more for your medicine."

"In their plan includes a trillion dollars in higher taxes, even on the middle class."

Mitt Romney and common-sense conservatives will cut taxes on the middle class."

OK. Wow.

I assume the readers here can handle this. So I'm not even going to bother to refute the lies. Apparently the Romney campaign assumes their voters and potential voters are about as completely uninformed, misinformed, out of touch and clueless as a person can possibly be -- with an assist from FOX News and Rush Limbaugh.

Just wow.

PS, yes there is a tax increase on cigarettes in the health care act -- the only possible factual basis for the Romney claims. But even for chainsmokers, their taxes have gone down by much more than this increase could possibly tax them.

The Latest Lie: "Redistribution Is A Foreign Concept"

Now Mitt Romney is using another selectively edited video to make it sound like President Obama is a communist who wants to seize all the wealth of the rich and hand it out to ... negroes and communist party members?

This week the Romney campaign dragged out a 1998 video of then-State Senator Barack Obama, doctored it to make it seem to sound bad, and used clips from the doctored video to drive a point that Obama is "foreign" and antin-American.

ABC: Republicans Hit Obama for ‘Redistribution’ Remark in 1998 Recording,

The audio, posted to YouTube by an unidentified user and dated Oct. 19, 1998, appears to be of remarks by then-Illinois State Sen. Obama at a conference at Loyola University in Chicago.

... I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution,” he said, “because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure everybody’s got a shot.”

In the full recording, obtained by NBC News, Obama continues to explain in the next sentence that he is speaking broadly about making city and state government more efficient in their use of resources — and endorses “competition” in the “marketplace.”

Romney Accusations

Romney took off on this word "redistribution, going full Joe McCarthy on it. HuffPuff: Mitt Romney Offers Full-Throated Attack On Obama's 'Redistribution',

“This idea of redistribution follows from the idea that if you have a business, you didn’t build it, someone else did that. It’s the same concept. That, see, government is responsible for everything that’s gone on here. And therefore government can take and give as it chooses. It’s an entirely foreign concept that will not work, that has not worked. That has never worked anywhere in the world. And what we have to do in America is not to make us more like Europe, but to make America more like America..."

Romney here is echoing the Ayn Randian anti-government idea that "taxes are theft" and decision-making by We, the People is evil "collectivism." The idea is that if regular people get to jointly make decisions they will tax the wealthy and use the money to do things like build schools and roads (and, God forbid, Medicare). This anti-government attitude is also the basis of the Romney campaign's derision for the idea that We, the People built the schools and roads that make businesses successful -- "We built that."

But the language he chooses, "entirely foreign concept," "has never worked anywhere in the world," "make us more like Europe" evokes 1950s anti-communist rhetoric. He is accusing Obama of being a communist.

Redistribution

Here are some ways the government redistributes the wealth:

Sidewalks: taxes pay for sidewalks that anyone can walk on. Redistribution.

Medicare: taxes pay for health care for old people. Redistribution.

Highways: Known communists President Dwight D. Eisenhower used tax money (taxed at a top rate of 90%) to build the Interstate highway system. Communist redistribution.

Every tax is redistribution. Every government redistributes. Paying for schools is redistribution. Paying for roads is redistribution.

Mitt Romney has mocked the idea of We, the People getting together and building things. He has mocked the idea of taxes used for schools and Medicare. In his "47%" remarks he denigrated half the country as moochers and takers. What is next?

The Latest Lie: "Obama Sympathizes With Muslim Rioters"

In April, 2011 American pastor Terry Jones burned a Koran which set off days of riots in Afghanistan that killed 12 people, including four UN guards. Now Jones has released an online film mocking Islam and the Prophet Mohammed, depicting him having sex. This set off riots in Muslim countries including Libya and Egypt, where they later stormed US embassies. The U.S. ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, was killed in the attack, along with three other Americans. The Romney campaign released a statement, on September 11, saying Obama sympathized with the rioters. Then today he doubled down, saying the White House stands "in apology for our values."

The timeline of this one is important. Before the protesters attacked the US embassies the local U.S. mission in Cairo released a statement -- not cleared by Washington -- about the Jones video that read, "The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions." Romney says this statement was issued in response to the attacks.

This statement, released locally and before the attacks, is the basis of Romney's accusation that President Obama "sympathizes" with the attackers, and "apologizes" for "our values."

Following the attacks President Obama issued the following statement:

I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.

I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.

On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya’s transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.

The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus sent out a message that read, "Obama sympathizes with attackers in Egypt. Sad and pathetic."

Prominent Republican stateswoman Sarah Palin wrote on Facebook, "We already know that President Obama likes to ‘speak softly’ to our enemies. If he doesn’t have a 'big stick' to carry, maybe it’s time for him to grow one."

The Latest Lie: Obama Will "Take God Off Our Coins"

Campaigning alongside Pat Robertson today, Mitt Romney implied that President Obama plans to "take God off our coins."

"That pledge says 'under God.' I will not take God out of our platform. I will not take God off our coins. And I will not take God out of my heart."

According to Sahil Kapur at TPM Livewire, reporting in Romney Implies Obama Will Remove God From Coins, Obama Campaign Fires Back,

Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith called the insinsuation false and an act of desperation.

"It’s disappointing to see Mitt Romney try to throw a Hail Mary by launching extreme and untrue attacks against the President and associating with some of the most strident and divisive voices in the Republican Party, including Rep. Steve King and Pat Robertson," she said in a statement. "This isn’t a recipe for making America stronger, it’s a recipe for division and taking us backward."

Romney also said he would "rebuild America’s military might." President Reagan doubled the military budget. President George 'W' Bush doubled the military budget again. The United States currently spends more on military than all other nations combined.

Romney/Ryan Going Full 'Southern Strategy' With Welfare

After all the fact-checkers and many in the media denounce the Romney campaign's blatant fabrication that Obama is "gutting" the welfare work requirement, Romney/Ryan doubled down, going full-on Angry White Male. The campaign says they are doing this because "it's working" and declares "we are not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers." Clearly not.

Romney Goes All "Old South"

Mitt Romney yesterday said that Obama's "base" consists of welfare recipients, and that Obama is making it easier to get welfare to get them to go vote.

Here is Mitt Romney speaking on, of course, FOX News, reported by Luke Johnson and Sam Stein at the Huffington Post, in, Mitt Romney Suggests Obama Welfare Waivers Are A Tactic To 'Shore Up His Base'

"Well, I'm not sure exactly what President Clinton will say, but there's no question that President Obama's decision to say that we're going to allow waivers or excuses from work requirements in welfare was designed to shore up part of his base that may not be inclined to go out and vote in the same kind of energy and passion as they did four years ago.

"And, I think putting a measure that would take work out of welfare and waiving the work requirement in welfare is an extraordinary political move on his part, and one which I disagree with. My own view is that we should have greater work requirements with welfare, not less."

Yes, he said that. This is not "dog-whistle politics" this is flat-out race baiting.

This followed running-mate Paul Ryan, as reported in the Washington Post, saying Obama was "rolling back welfare reform."

"And by the way, under President Clinton, we got welfare reform … which moved people from welfare to work, to get people out of poverty. President Obama is rolling back welfare reform."

Suppressing Minority Voters

At the same time as the campaign is using race to appeal to bigoted white male voters, several Republican-dominated states are engaging in efforts to suppress the votes of Hispanics and African-Americans. Ari Berman,writing at the Nation in, Voter Suppression: The Confederacy Rises Again explains, (click through for complete list, and links)

Eight of eleven states in the former Confederacy have passed restrictive voting laws since the 2010 election, as part of a broader war on voting undertaken by the GOP. Some of these changes have been mitigated by recent federal and state court rulings against the GOP, yet it’s still breathtaking to consider the different ways Republicans have sought to suppress the minority vote in the region.

• Laws mandating strict forms of government-issued identification to cast a ballot were passed in Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Virginia tightened a looser voter ID law. A federal court blocked Texas’s discriminatory voter ID law last week and will rule on South Carolina’s law shortly. ...

• Laws requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote were passed in Alabama and Tennessee. Restrictions on voter registration drives were enacted in Florida and Texas. ...

• Early voting periods were reduced in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. African-Americans in states like Florida were twice as likely to cast ballots during early voting as white voters. ...

... • Only three Southern states—Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina—did not pass restrictive voting laws since 2010. North Carolina Democratic Governor Bev Perdue twice vetoed efforts by North Carolina Republicans to pass a strict voter ID law before the 2012 election. ...

• In conjunction with these new voting restrictions, Republicans all across the South used their control of state legislatures following 2010 to pass redistricting maps that will lead to a re-segregation of Southern politics. ...

The consequences of these changes will be to make it harder for growing minority populations to be able to cast a ballot in much of the South and to make the region more segregated politically at a time when it is becoming more diverse demographically.

Legitimacy?

If Romney "wins" the election with a campaign of race-baiting, lies and voter suppression, many people may not consider his election to be legitimate. They are likely to feel that the public was bullied and tricked, and that the purpose of the bullying and trickery was to hand the country over to corporations and billionaires for plunder. The Romney/Ryan plan is to drastically cut the taxes on billionaires and their giant corporations, and severely cut back the things that our government does for We, the People.

If they do gain power with these tactics, especially after there were so questions about the way George 'W' Bush gained power, it could lead to a perilous civil situation.

The Green Cheese Campaign, Or Say What You Need To Say To Get In The Door

The Republican Party seems to have become a party of "say what you need to say to get in the door." And what happens when they do get in that door?

The Green Cheese Campaign

"Obama is mining green cheese on the moon and putting it in school lunch milk."

The things that Republicans are saying appears to have less to do with anything going on in the real world and more and more to do with tricking people than during any previous campaign. It seems to have become almost entirely a game of just saying what you think needs to be said to ~~sell that used car~~ get that vote. It's about what you need to say that day, that hour, that half of the sentence, to ~~sell that used car~~ get that vote.

Green Cheese: If their campaign consultants did their polls and focus groups and asked people what it would take ~~for them to buy the car~~ to get their vote, and 51% of the people they talked to said if they learned that Obama was mining green cheese from the moon and putting it into the milk schools give to kids, hearing that would make them vote against Obama -- then the next day:

- the Drudge Report would have a huge headline "OBAMA MINING GREEN CHEESE FROM MOON AND PUTTING IT IN KIDS' MILK,"

- and FOX News would run hours upon hours of commentators talking about the scandal of OBAMA MINING GREEN CHEESE,

- and all the right-wing blogs would be whipping up "the base' about the GREEN CHEESE SCANDAL,

- and then Rush and all of talk radio would start blasting out about the OBAMA GREEN CHEESE IN MILK scandal.

- The Heritage Foundation would have a "study" ready, "linking" Democratic donors to the green cheese mining contracts.

- Republicans in Congress would hold hearings "looking into Obama's green cheese mining."

- Online newspaper comment sections and online forums and every astroturfable outlet would be screaming about the OBAMA POISONING KIDS with help from Karl Marx and Van Jones, using secret ACORN resources.

- CNN would start "reporting" on it it, with actual photos of Obama cheese-mining craft heading to the moon...

- And after a few weeks of that NBC and CBS and ABC and the Washington Post would be reporting on how the "Obama Cheese Scandal" -- officially a "truth" now, with no refutation from any "news" source --was affecting Obama's poll numbers.

What They ARE Saying (today)

Things Republicans are saying, to ~~sell that used car~~ get that vote include:

Obama raised taxes on the middle class. (Obama cut taxes on the middle class.)

Obama cut Medicare to pay for Obamacare. (No cuts in benefits, actually Obamacare increases benefits. Romney/Ryan plan to cut Medicare, period.)

Obama gutted the work requirements in welfare. (In fact they increased them.)

Obama, making the case for government, said "you didn't build" the roads and bridges that enable businesses.

Etc...

In what was possibly the biggest lie of his convention speech (if it is possible to choose just one) Mitt Romney actually said that Republicans rallied around the President after the election! In fact Republicans vowed to block every single thing the President tried to do to help get us out of the mess the Republican administration he was replacing left behind. And that mess is the problem -- Republicans say what they need to say to get into office, but once in office they follow the same-old-same-old plan.

Once the conventions are over the real "campaign" begins. That is when we will see the effect of the billionaire/corporate money kick in. We ain't seen nothing yet.

Once In The Door?

Conservative leader Grover Norquist sums it up. Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in DC this last February, Norquist said of Romney, "We want the Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff."

All we have to do is replace Obama. ... We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don't need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.

And what is that agenda for once they get in the door? Digby writes about that in The Plan, describing Romney's nomination-acceptance speech,

So, they are going to create jobs by opening up drilling, privatizing schools, off-shoring business, slashing government, cutting taxes and cutting regulations.

In other words, the same exact agenda they always have. Well except for the war-as-stimulus he might have to start. Other than that, the GOP agenda remains what it always is --- good for whatever ails you, no matter what.

This is September. It is a long way till November and the election. Sheesh.

The Latest Lie: Campaign Of Hate

Mitt "I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I" Romney has accused President President Obama of running a "campaign of division and anger and hate." WTF?

FOX News: Romney unleashes on Obama, accuses rival of running campaign of 'anger and hate',

Mitt Romney, capping off a five-state bus tour in Ohio Tuesday night, delivered the most aggressive and fiery speech of his bid for the presidency -- accusing President Obama of running a "campaign of division and anger and hate" while taking on what he called an "outrageous charge" by Vice President Biden.

The Republican presidential candidate lit into his White House rival at a rally in Chillicothe, Ohio. Though some of the candidate's speeches are written by staff, aides told Fox News that Romney personally wrote this one over the course of two days.

This accusation appears to be based on Romney's complaints about an ad run by a super PAC -- not the Obama campaign -- that features a man laid off after Romney's Bain Capital took over the company where he worked, talking about what happened to his wife after the layoff took their health insurance. This ad resonates because it shows the effect on people's lives when companies like Bain Capital lay people off or cut wages, and send the "savings" to a few at the top, as well as the effect on people's lives if Romney is able to, as he promises, "repeal Obamacare."

Romney's accusations against Obama are based on his claim that the super PAC running the ad supports Obama. Meanwhile, the Drudge Report, a site that supports Mitt Romney, has the following headlines:

Following the "campaign of hate" accusation Romney moved on to make a false accusation that Obama is gutting Medicare, and a false accusation that Obama is gutting the work requirements in welfare... Politico, Mitt Romney blasts campaign of ‘hate’

“Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago and let us get about rebuilding and reuniting America,” Romney said to the cheers of thousands crowded into the streets here.

...“If the President is reelected, he will succeed in raiding $716 billion from Medicare — from the trust fund you have paid into all your lives — to pay for Obamacare,” Romney said. “He is taking your money to finance his risky and unproven takeover of the health-care system.”

Noticeably missing from Romney’s speech was his recent attack on Obama for changing work rules for welfare recipients, a charge independent fact checkers have deemed false.

Romney may also be referring to Joe Biden's comment that Romney and Ryan unchaining businesses and Wall Street might "put y'all back in chains." The Romney campaign called this a "new low."
