The Republican Senate minority filibustered an omnibus budget bill, setting a modern-day record for blocking the most legislation during a congressional session. A new report released by the Campaign for America's Future details the 62 times conservatives have used the filibuster to block legislation (or force modification of bills) in the first session of the 110th Congress.

On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, conservatives in the U.S. Senate set a modern-day record for obstruction. They forced the 62nd cloture vote to move beyond a filibuster. We launched a petition encouraging the Senate Majority Leader to not back down from the filibuster threats, and nearly 20,000 people signed on. Pressure from our campaign and progressives across the country pushed Senator Reid to force the Republicans to filibuster in a headline-grabbing move.

We stepped up our pressure on Reid by publicizing the conservative obstruction with this video, which received over 100,000 views. Unfortunately, Reid failed to stand up against the obstruction, which cost the 110th Congress precious opportunity for progress. more »
