Beyond today's political squabbles over such topics as offshore drilling or oil speculation is this hard fact: the Age of Oil — and an American empire built on oil — is coming to an end, and there is no turning back. Americans can either get out in front of this change and come out of it at the century's end with much of their greatness intact — or continue to fight it and end up as another of history's has-beens.
The largest component of renewables generation capacity is wind power, which grew by 28 percent worldwide in 2007 to reach an estimated 95 GW. Annual capacity additions increased even more: 40 percent higher in 2007 compared to 2006.

The conservative minority in the Senate blocked investment in renewable energy. And the arm of obstructionism reached halfway around the world to Bali, where White House officials are throttling the international effort to combat global warming.
Burning fossil fuels is leading us to the brink of a climate crisis. We have the technology today to put us on a new path towards a clean energy economy. Let’s stop propping up Big Oil and start investing in our future.
