openleft.com — In fact, you guys were on the other side. And not just way long time ago. You've always been there and you still are. The cold, hard, historical data above leaves no real doubt that conservatives have never been particularly supportive of blacks civil rights struggles. To the contrary, the libertarian concept of individual freedom is — consciously or not — based on white privilege and property ownership, and the kinds of exclusionary concerns that come with that privileged history. Although there were individual exceptions, conservatives on the whole — whether Republicans or Democrats — were the backbone of opposition to the Civil Rights Movement. To pretend the opposite is to engage in willful self-delusion.
