The percentage of vacant homes for sale nationwide reached a record high in the first quarter, according to a government report. The Census Bureau reported that 2.9 percent of U.S. homes — excluding rental properties — were vacant and for sale, compared with 2.8 percent in the fourth quarter of last year. It was the highest quarterly percentage in records going back to 1956.
