For almost two weeks [2], Chuck Moody and other Downtown workers have had to walk carefully along First Avenue, where part of the sidewalk is closed.

"It appears to be a wide sinkhole in the sidewalk. You can see what looks like a basement underneath," said Moody, who works nearby at the office of the Pittsburgh Catholic newspaper.

For about 10 days, the sidewalk had been blocked. That forced pedestrians to walk into the street and navigate around passing cars.

"A lot of people did not like walking near speeding cars," Moody said.
