Campaign for America’s Future Warns Democrats: Do Not Hit Seniors

Better Solutions Including Deeper Pentagon Cuts Should Be on the Table

Washington, DC -- The Campaign for America’s Future opposes benefit cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Robert Borosage, co-director of the Campaign for America’s Future said, “The President’s reported acceptance of Republican demands that fairer taxes on the rich only take place if we lower cost of living increases for Social Security beneficiaries and for veterans who receive benefits is unacceptable. The President and Members of Congress will be abandoning America’s working families if they support cuts in benefits to America’s most vulnerable citizens by lowering Social Security and Veteran’s benefits through the chained CPI.

“There are better solutions for deficit reduction than to cut basic security of people who have worked hard all their lives and who have served our country. Instead of benefits cuts, the President and Democrats should support sensible cuts to Pentagon spending, negotiating drug prices with pharmaceutical companies and cutting subsidies to oil companies.”

Borosage noted, “We should be talking about job creation, not deficit reduction. The best way to lower the deficit is to get Americans working at jobs that pay. But if we are going to focus on spending cuts or tax hikes, the real test is who pays. The American middle class and low income Americans should not be the target of cuts. When Americans are evaluating these proposals, they should look at who gets hit. There are better solutions.”
