New Petition Effort Slams Republicans for Obstruction On Behalf Of Wall Street
Campaign for America’s Future Calls on Senate Republicans to Put Consumers First & Stop Blocking Elizabeth Warren
Washington, DC -- Republicans are using parliamentary tricks to prevent the Senate from formally adjourning, attempting to prevent President Obama from making a recess appointment of Elizabeth Warren to be a much-needed watchdog over Wall Street. The Campaign for America’s Future is asking Americans to contact their Senators and make clear that Americans want Elizabeth Warren have the top job protecting consumers from Wall Street’s excesses.
“Senate Republicans seem to think they can carry water for Wall Street without objection from constituents,” said Robert Borosage, co-director of the Campaign for America’s Future. “We should not let them get away with obstruction on behalf of the Wall Street bankers who caused the financial crisis. Let’s remember that in the absence of a watchdog with some teeth – Wall Street pushed this country into a financial crisis.”
“The Senate Republicans are doing big favors for Wall Street banks, and doing real damage to the interests of consumers,” Borosage said, “Senate Republicans are hoping no one is paying attention. They want to kill the chance for a real champion of the consumer to be the first chief of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.”
Already, the Campaign for America's Future petition in support of a Warren appointment has garnered more than 20,000 signatures. And combining the efforts of our progressive allies over the past week, nearly 300,000 people have declared their support for Warren.
The Senate Republicans have already announced they won't confirm any nominee to lead the consumer bureau unless the President allows them to gut the bureau first.
