THOUSANDS OF ACTIVISTS TO MEET IN JUNE TO SEIZE GREATEST OPPORTUNITY FOR PROGRESSIVE REFORM IN A GENERATION
Monday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 3, 2009 Campaign for America’s Future’s Annual “Take Back America” Conference Now Called “America’s Future Now!!” to Shape a New Political Era
Campaign for America’s Future co-directors Robert Borosage and Roger Hickey today announced that their organization’s annual conference, formerly known as “Take Back America,” will be held from Monday, June 1 to Wednesday, June 3 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington. Celebrating the progressive movement’s successes in the 2008 elections, organizers have a new name for the conference -- “America’s Future Now!.”
The conference has been an essential stop for presidential candidates seeking the support of activists. This year, “America’s Future Now!” will reunite thousands of progressive leaders of every stripe to seize the greatest opportunity for bold reform in a generation. President Obama outlined his progressive vision for America’s future in two separate keynote addresses at the conference in 2006 and 2007 and won The Politico’s straw poll of participants before last year’s epic Primary Elections.
“America’s Future Now!” will be held a few days after President Obama’s first 100 days in office. Progressive activists and lawmakers, many of whom have worked hard to pass the president’s early economic recovery, health care and energy initiatives, plan to use this year’s gathering to evaluate the successes and failures of their work with the White House, Congress and President Obama’s new “Organize for America” network.
“Throughout history, the progressive movement has always been the engine that has driven America out of the ditches and towards its best days,” said Borosage. “We will convene to explore what's working and what isn't, who is on our side and who stands in the way. We’ll continue to stay on the offense on behalf of the clear majority that demanded progressive change in the wake of conservatism’s failures.”
“President Obama can't do it alone,” said Hickey, “He needs a movement behind him – to expand the limits of the debate, take on those standing in the way and help drive the change we need.”
With the country’s political center shifting progressive, and the opportunities greater and stakes higher, Borosage and Hickey expect the largest turnout ever for their annual gathering.
