Keeping The Lights On

Hurricane Sandy off the CarolinasIt's been rumored for some time that my governor, Maryland's Martin O'Malley, is considering a run for the White House in 2016. O'Malley has dropped a few hints himself. He tested the waters at the Democratic convention, and launched a national PAC this summer. If O'Malley does run for president in 2016, he got closer to getting my vote thanks to his handling of hurricane Sandy. Specifically, Gov. O'Malley won me  over by fulfilling a promise to keep our lights on by keeping his "boot up the backside" of our local power utility — the one our previous Republican governor left virtually unregulated.

Conservatism's Disastrous Disaster-Relief Model

In recent years, the metro D.C. area has faced its share of natural disasters. There was the derecho, and before that, there was the earthquake. Both of those were unexpected disasters. Now we sit waiting for Hurricane Sandy, a potentially devastating disaster that was forecast weeks ago, to make landfall.

But there's an even bigger disaster looming behind this hurricane. It's not a natural disaster, but an ideological disaster that could strike the whole country, and promises to cost more in terms of human misery and human life than any natural disaster we've faced so far.

If Mitt Romney Told The Truth About Jobs

Having entered the "closing argument" phase of the campaign, President Obama has pivoted to jobs. But as Bill Scher noted, the president's newly published jobs plan is cribbed from from policies that he's already proposed. President Obama has always enjoyed the advantage a massive policy gap between him and Romney. President Obama is finally pressing his his policy advantage on jobs — effectively saying to conservatives, "We've got you jobs bills right here," right where they've always been. (Now, he should do the same with his job creation advantage.) The "nitty gritty" details of President Obama's jobs plan are posted on the White House website, and thus are a matter of public record.

On the other hand, Mitt Romney's jobs plan is based on bogus math, just as bad as the math behind his tax plan. (And Romney's tax math was so bad even Fox news didn't buy it.) Paul Ryan admitted that he and Romney "haven't run the numbers" on their budget. Vagueness is probably the best possible strategy for the Romney campaign, for one simple reason: Mitt Romney can't afford to tell the truth about jobs.

Outsourcing: One More Reason Tom Reed's a Big Zero For the Middle Class

It turns out that Mitt Romney and Tom Reed (R, NY-23) have more in common than mere party affiliation. Both Romney and Reed are more interested in outsourcing American jobs than creating the kind of good jobs once helped to build and sustain the middle-class. Instead, Romney and Reed both support policies that result in more stories like what's happening at the Sensata factory in Freeport, IL. That makes Romney wrong for America, and make Tom Reed a big zero for the middle class.
