Don't Make Us Work 'Til We Die

Don't Make Us Work 'Til We Die

It’s easy to suggest raising the retirement age to 69 or 70 – if you are a right-wing think tanker or Senator, sitting at a desk all day.

But people who work real jobs could face requirements to work way past the time when their bodies can stand it, if conservative deficit hawks get their way. This cruel attack on our retirement security may become part of a bipartisan deficit reduction deal, unless we mobilize.

Tell Congress: Back Off Social Security

Last week, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said out loud what he really thinks: he believes Social Security "cannot exist." At all. For anyone. The Campaign for America's Future isn't letting Rep. Cantor get away with it. We have a TV ad that will let his constituents know about his extreme opposition to Social Security. But we need your help to get it on the air in his congressional district. Watch the ad and help keep it on the air » more »

Tell President Obama: Reject Social Security Cuts

We must send an urgent message to President Obama — to tell him to reject the proposal to slash Social Security benefits coming from the co-chairs of his deficit commission. If President Obama tries to cut Social Security, it would spell political disaster in 2012.

He hasn't yet decided to embrace these dangerous proposals. It's up to us to make sure he doesn't.

Social Security Isn't Broke

In the deficit hysteria now sweeping Washington, Social Security has emerged in the bull's-eye as a target for cuts. And kicking the old, the disabled, the widowed is now elevated into a machismo measure of credibility on reducing the debt.

We don't need politicians demonstrating their "credibility" by kicking the elderly and the disabled. We don't need to fix a Social Security program that isn't broken. The best "fix" for Social Security is simply to tell the truth about it.

Social Security isn't broke; there is no need to "fix" it.

Welcome to the Virtual Summit

Deficit hysteria has reached a reach a fever pitch as a leading advocate of gutting Social Security and Medicare, Wall Street mogul Pete Peterson, hosts a heavily hyped "Fiscal Summit" on April 28. But the people who wrecked the economy should not be setting the national agenda for how we repair the damage. We've asked select bloggers and experts to write about what it means to have a progressive stance on fiscal and economic responsibility that does not break our social contract with the elderly, the sick and the poor. more »

URGENT: Stop CNN's Deficit Propaganda

CNN decided to surrender its airwaves the weekend of April 10-11 to conservative Wall Street mogul Pete Peterson and his crusade to gut Social Security and other safety-net programs in the guise of addressing a "deficit crisis." Missing from the debate are progressive approaches to resolving legitimate fiscal concerns while continuing to make the investments in people and in our nation that will strengthen our economy and our well-being. These articles present those arguments. more »
