It may have escaped the NYT's attention that the constitution got torn up in the reign of King W Bush and that the NYT did its fair share of damage when it printed articles supporting claims of non-existing weapons of mass destruction in Iraq thereby undermining the notion of free speech. Free to speak perhaps but no longer as the voice of the people. Free to speak for the government and corporations.
It takes a while to realise that this NYT Op Ed is probably the most honest thing they have written in a long time
