As President Obama tackles the financial crisis, his policies must address the economic distress unevenly affecting Americans. Assessments of the impact cannot be reduced to abstract averages or gross aggregates. Jobless rates and other economic measures have human dimensions that vary dramatically across the nation.
As senators prepare to act on a jobs bill, they must remember that this is not a time for half-measures. We need more than 400,000 jobs a month over the next three years to close the gap created by the financial crisis. The House-passed jobs bill is a start. Nothing less than that will do.
Americans are angry. Wall Street has been bailed out, and there's no sign of job growth on Main Street. We know this is important because Sarah Palin's poll-tested tea party speech featured it.
