Rebranding Republicans

"We're going to give you the change you deserve."
—House Minority Leader John Boehner

That's not a threat; it's a promise—from the Republican congressional leaders. Really. Led by perpetually tanned House leader John Boehner, Republicans have suddenly discovered that the country wants change—and they have decided to offer it to us. more »

A Little Love for Big Oil

As gas prices head towards $4 a barrel, some politicians, as Rev. Jeremiah Wright would say, "do what politicians do" and propose a gas-tax holiday. Only there's one small problem with this tax cut: The oil companies are likely to pocket most of it. We've seen it happen before. more »

David Broder: The Democrats' Worst Nightmare

What could David Broder possibly be drinking? Has he forgotten the John McCain who voted against the Bush tax cuts, but now embraces them — or the McCain who could have blocked the administration's torture policies, but instead empowered Bush to define torture — just to “prevail” in the “contest” for the Republican nomination? The commentariat will have to choose between their affection for McCain and their commitment to common sense. Their choice should be instructive. If they follow Broder's example, that will be the Democrats' worst nightmare. more »

McCain’s Economic Remedy: A Double Dose of the Same

mccain-speaks2.jpgSen. John McCain this week delivered what the campaign billed as a major address on the economy. And while McCain says he understands people are hurting, he hasn’t allowed this to clutter his thinking. He just recycles the old platitudes of the market fundamentalists. more »

Brain-Dead Trade Debate

High gasoline prices, mortgage foreclosures, turmoil in financial markets, and a war in Iraq that is ever more costly in money and lives. So the President of the United States steps up to the crisis and demands a fast-track vote from the Congress in 90 days on … a trade agreement with Colombia. It's an insulting debate taking place as if we were still living in Ronald Reagan's “morning in America.”

    10 days That Changed Capitalism

By Rob Johnson and Robert Borosage

The world has changed.  The market fundamentalism that has dominated our economics over last three decades has been unmasked as a sham, deemed useless by the guardian of the integrity of finance itself, the Federal Reserve.

McCain: Playing Election Year Politics with the Credit Crisis

One in ten homes is “under water” – worth less than their mortgages. 2 million homeowners are headed to foreclosure. The shadow banking system verges on collapse. Banks across world are shaken. The world fears global recession. Fearful of a catastrophic unraveling, the Federal Reserve has slashed interest rates. more »

It’s not the French; it’s US

Our McCain ad struck a chord, eliciting both reason and vitriol. Strikes me that it is worth being clear what the ad says and doesn’t say.

Other than the bad French accent, it isn’t “anti-French, xenophobic or “racist.” It doesn’t accuse the French of taking jobs from us. It features a Frenchman hailing McCain for bringing jobs to France. There is a fundamental difference. more »
