A Watergate-era Nixon White House tactic, adopted by disciple Karl Rove, was to discredit their critics by seeding their movements with agents provocateur who did disgusting things in order to render it harder for Middle America to identify with even the most reasonable and popular parts of their critique.

Is this what is happening now, with reports spreading across the right-wing about a defacing of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?
