Jena, Louisiana is
• A town in which only one-quarter of the white population didn't vote for David Duke for governor.
• The seat of a La Salle Parish, which voted 80.39 percent for Bush in 2004. And which, sometimes, votes for Democrats - for instance when the Republican gubernatorial candidate happens to be named Bobby (né "Piyush") Jindal.
• Is the reason federal civil rights law exists - because there is a measure of basic justice beneath which no American, no matter how obscenely racist or corrupt their local jurisdiction happens to be, should be allowed to fall.
