From Bloomberg News:
A bid to overhaul the federal consumer watchdog agency hit a snag today, making it less likely Democrats will meet their goal of passing the measure this year. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell delayed a committee vote on the legislation until next week because he faced a series of votes on amendments to his measure that would ban lead in toys, require outside safety tests of toys and impose new recordkeeping procedures on importers. "Many of these amendments are just going to make it hard to pass this bill and harder to get it signed by the president," said Dingell, a Michigan Democrat.
It is really just outright stunning to watch Democrats rationalize their refusal to strengthen basic consumer protection legislation by saying the measures "are just going to make it hard to pass this bill and harder to get it signed by the president."
If there was a college class teaching politicians how to look weak, this comment from Dingell might be the very first exhibit the professor used as an example.
