Compassionless Conservatism (UPDATED)

Rick Perlstein's picture

I could be wrong, and would be glad to be corrected, but did none of the Republican candidates in their speeches tonight extend their sympathy to the victims of the tornadoes in Tennessee and Arkansas?

UPDATE: I'm not the only one who noticed.

The Bible Story Huckabee DIDN'T Quote in His Speech Last Night by Deborah
Brown

The Reverend was showing his roots last night in his Super Tuesday Speech,
managing to pull out allusions to David & Goliath and the parable of the
Widow's Mite almost in the same breath:

Tonight, we are making sure America understands that sometimes one small
smooth stone is even more effective than a whole lot of armor. (APPLAUSE)
And we've also seen that "The Widow's Might" has more effectiveness than all
the gold in the world. Huckabee's Super Tuesday
speech

While he was busy spouting Scriptural references, look who was living out
her faith:
.

.. and on just -- on just one really serious note, we want to keep the
people of Arkansas and Tennessee in our prayers. They suffered horrible
tornadoes tonight.
We just talked to some of our folks there and people have died in both
states, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them in this moment of their
need. Clinton's Super Tuesday
speech

And she wasn't alone:

Before I begin, I just want to send my condolences to the victims of the
storms that hit Tennessee and Arkansas today. They are in our thoughts and
in our prayers, and we hope that our federal government will respond quickly
and rapidly to make sure that they get all the help that they need.
(Applause.) Obama's Super Tuesday speech

While people lay buried in rubble, what was on the Republican's
newly-crowned front runner's mind? McCain was:

... "mindful that I'm not only running for the highest office in the
greatest country on earth, but that I'm also running for the great privilege
of leading the party that has been my political home for a quarter century.
" McCain's Super Tuesday
speech

He was mindful of his goal, and of the help of his supporters, but he missed
the tragedy that was unfolding in some of the very states where he won
votes.

Mitt Romney was planning to roll up his sleeves and keep working through the
evening, but did any of those plans include thoughts for the storm victims?

We're going see what kind of numbers come in. We'll add those numbers up and
have them bright and early in the morning. My guess is at our home we'll be
staying up a little bit later than most of you will. We'll be looking at
those numbers. Romney's Super Tuesday speech

What do we get from the top 3 Republicans? Numbers and victory speeches.
Thank you's and campaign centered comments. And from our Democrats? An
awareness of the wider picture of what the evening was meaning to 45
Americans and their families. A willingness to draw a circle that included
not just their own followers and supporters, but a thought and a prayer to
spare.

And I ask you, which of these did the will of their Father?
