Bryn Mawr

Joe Biden, always one for inscrutable apothegms, said something strange about Bryn Mawr College the other day:

Prompted by a local reporter, he explained why he wears a flag pin.... "In the neighborhood I grew up in, you were proud of it. It was a way of showing solidarity," Biden said. "I'm not some phony patriot."... He added to his flag discourse a classic Bidenesque line: that he had recently been challenged about his pin after a speech in Boulder, Colorado by a "very attractive woman who looked like she just finished a sociology course at Bryn Mawr college, if you know what I mean." Judging by the blank reaction, most in his audience appeared not to.

I'm probably the only human on the planet so tanked to the gills with obscure tidbits of right-wing history that this recalled a classic line from Whittaker Chambers' book Witness. The legendary conservative hero and former Communist spy is bitching about all the fellow travelers in the Time magazine section of the Newspaper guild union:

“’How dare you,’ she asked with the voice of Bryn Mawr but the snarl of a fishwife, ‘how dare you call us Communists.’”
