Tell Congress: 10 Years Of Bush Tax Cuts Is Enough!

10 years ago, on June 7, 2001, President George W. Bush enacted the Bush tax cuts, which led to the "worst track record on record" for jobs, according to the Wall Street Journal. But while Bush made our tax brackets more regressive, Rep. Jan Schakowsky's Fairness in Taxation Act makes them more progressive: It would create new tax brackets for annual income above $1 million, starting at 45% for income between $1 million and $10 million, inching up to 49% for income over $1 billion. It's plain common sense. more »

Tell Republican Obstructionists: Stop Blocking Elizabeth Warren

We've led a massive grassroots groundswell for Elizabeth Warren's appointment to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and rein in reckless bankers. And Senate Republicans have responded with parliamentary tricks to prevent the Senate from formally adjourning, and handcuffed President Obama's ability to make a recess appointment.
This obstruction on behalf of the Wall Street homewreckers who caused the financial crisis is outrageous. It's time for Senate Republicans to feel the wrath of Main Street. more »

We Need Change: Give Elizabeth Warren a Recess Appointment

The Senate Republican minority has publicly announced it will filibuster any nominee to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, unless the President strips the new bureau of much of his ability to protect consumers and hold banks accountable. If Senate Republicans are going to unreasonably withhold their votes, the President has no obligation to cater to their demands. He can use his constitutional powers to make appointments while Congress is in recess after May 27, and nominate the best person for the job. Many signed the petition to urge the President to appoint the best: Elizabeth Warren. more »

Mr. President, Put the People's Budget on the Table

There's only one deficit reduction proposal clearly backed by the American majority: the "People's Budget" from the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Yet none of the authors of the "People's Budget" are currently part of the White House-led bipartisan budget negotiations. The Progressive Caucus wrote a letter to President Obama asking to be part of the budget talks. Now the President needs to hear from the rest of us in the American majority. Many sent letters to the President, saying "Put the People's Budget on the Table." more »

Draw Down Afghanistan. Build Up America.

Now that Osama bin Laden is dead, we have fulfilled the objective that took us into Afghanistan. Meanwhile, we have not completed the mission at home: to restore the American economy.

Many signed the petition below and helped send a message to the White House and Congress: It's time to draw down in Afghanistan, and build up America. more »

Tell Obama: Keep Your Social Security Promise

President Obama Considered embracing Social Security cuts in the annual State of the Union address. President Obama should listen to Candidate Obama, who said "cutting benefits is not the right answer." Hear Candidate Obama's powerful words in the video on the right. more »

Tell Obama: Don't Dare Cut Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security

The President proposed cutting the deficit by, according to his top aide, taking a "look at Medicare and Medicaid," and that he's also "eager" to have a "discussion" on Social Security.

We urgently warned the President through an email campaign: by embracing cuts to essential benefits for our elderly and poor, it undermined our economy and your re-election campaign. more »

Help Expose Rep. Eric Cantor's Plan To Make Sure Social Security "Cannot Exist."

Last week, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said out loud what he really thinks: He believes Social Security "cannot exist." At all. For anyone. The Campaign for America's Future has a TV ad that will let his constituents know about his extreme opposition to Social Security. But we need your help to get it on the air. Pushing for Real Health Care Reform

May - November 2009

As soon as the battle over the recovery act and the budget ended, the battle for real health care reform began. Throughout the summer of 2009 we engaged in several campaigns to push both Congress and President Obama to make sure a public health insurance option was part of any health insurance reform that passed Congress. Together with our allies we gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures on petitions demanding real reform, and had thousands of our supporters call their members of Congress. As a result of our efforts and the sustained push from progressives across the country Congress defied the conventional wisdom in Washington submitted health insurance reform bills that include a public option in both chambers of Congress! more »

Protect The Estate Tax

April 2009

When the 2010 budget was moving through Congress, conservatives, while refusing to support the budget out of a misguided sense of "fiscal responsibility", inserted an amendment into the budget that would cut the estate tax for the richest 5,854 multimillionaire families in America, while costing the government over $300 billion in lost revenue over the next 10 years. Just when it looked like this wildly irresponsible and regressive measure was going to find safe harbor in the budget, we responded by asking progressives to make their voices heard. more »

Fight For Obama's Budget

March - April 2009

After the success of passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, President Obama's next big priority was to pass the fiscal 2010 federal budget resolutions. Once again, the conservative opposition mounted a fierce campaign to embrace the failures of Herbert Hoover and the Bush presidency, and even supported an alternative budget which called for more Bush-style tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy as a way to get us out of the recession those same policies helped create. Once again, we called on the progressive community to fight for real solutions from Congress. more »
