Tell the Senate: Pass Student Loan Reform

The bankster lobby is at it again. This time, they're out to screw America's students.

After the President and the House backed legislation ending the $80 billion scam of subsidizing big banks so they can gouge students on college loans that the government guarantees anyway, the lobbyists are hell-bent on killing student loan reform in the Senate.

End the $80 billion handout to the big banks. Click here to demand your Senators pass student loan reform. more »

Tell The Washington Post: Don't Let Conservatives Write The News

The Washington Post has turned over its news pages to an organization, founded by billionaire austerity activist Pete Peterson, dedicated to undermining Social Security and Medicare, and stifling public investment in America's future. We can't have an informed debate over economic recovery when seemingly objective media violates basic journalism ethics and chooses sides. Tell the Washington Post ombudsman: Sever all ties with Pete Peterson and The Fiscal Times. more »

Protect Social Security and Medicare! Tell Congress: No "Budget Commission"

Conservatives in Congress are pushing a plan to gut Medicare and Social Security benefits--and slash needed public spending--by means of an undemocratic "deficit commission" that would bypass the normal legislative process, strangle a weak economy and shred the retirement safety net.

We at the Campaign for America's Future, working with other groups, have built a coalition of more than 40 organizations around a statement opposing this "Conrad-Gregg deficit commission." One of our partners, The Frances Perkins Center, produced a great action email copied below, right after Fed Chair Ben Bernanke quoted bank robber Willie Sutton, saying we should cut Social Security and Medicare because, "That's where the money is!"

But we know where the real money is: the pockets of the rich who have gotten billions in bailouts and tax cuts. Please sign this petition action, and together we can derail this dangerous, undemocratic commission. more »

Fight for Choice. Keep Stupak Out of Final Health Bill

The historic passage of health reform in the House last week was severely marred by the inclusion of the anti-reproductive choice Stupak amendment, which would overnight end the routine practice of including abortion in insurance coverage.

But this fight against Stupak is far from over. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has yet to finalize his version of the bill. The Senate floor debate has not begun. The House and Senate have not met to work out legislative differences.

Most importantly, the voices of America's pro-choice majority have not been heard in Congress. At least, not yet. more »

American Wind Power Made In China? Let's Create Jobs Here

Our stimulus money could end up being used to send green jobs to China. With unemployment in America just having surpassed 10 percent, that is economic malpractice.Tell Energy Secretary Steven Chu: Don't send our Recovery Act tax dollars overseas. American stimulus funds must create American green jobs. more »

Pushing for Real Health Care Reform

May - November 2009

As soon as the battle over the recovery act and the budget ended, the battle for real health care reform began. Throughout the summer of 2009 we engaged in several campaigns to push both Congress and President Obama to make sure a public health insurance option was part of any health insurance reform that passed Congress. Together with our allies we gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures on petitions demanding real reform, and had thousands of our supporters call their members of Congress. As a result of our efforts and the sustained push from progressives across the country Congress defied the conventional wisdom in Washington submitted health insurance reform bills that include a public option in both chambers of Congress! more »

Protect The Estate Tax

April 2009

When the 2010 budget was moving through Congress, conservatives, while refusing to support the budget out of a misguided sense of "fiscal responsibility", inserted an amendment into the budget that would cut the estate tax for the richest 5,854 multimillionaire families in America, while costing the government over $300 billion in lost revenue over the next 10 years. Just when it looked like this wildly irresponsible and regressive measure was going to find safe harbor in the budget, we responded by asking progressives to make their voices heard. more »

Fight For Obama's Budget

March - April 2009

After the success of passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, President Obama's next big priority was to pass the fiscal 2010 federal budget resolutions. Once again, the conservative opposition mounted a fierce campaign to embrace the failures of Herbert Hoover and the Bush presidency, and even supported an alternative budget which called for more Bush-style tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy as a way to get us out of the recession those same policies helped create. Once again, we called on the progressive community to fight for real solutions from Congress. more »
