money.cnn.com — Prosecutors urged a federal judge to put alleged Ponzi scammer Bernard Madoff behind bars for trying to mail more than $1 million worth of valuable items to family members. The U.S. Department of Justice accused Madoff, who is currently under house arrest in Manhattan, of sending five packages "containing valuables to relatives and others." The prosecution said an additional two packages with "contents unknown" were sent to Madoff's brother and "an unidentified couple in Florida." Prosecutors said the actions violate the terms of Madoff's house arrest, and show that "current bail conditions are insufficient to assure the safety of the community from the defendant" because he might try to "dissipate" assets from his three homes in the United States and his home in France.

reuters.com — An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning has made 388 people sick across 42 states, sending 18 percent of them to the hospital, U.S. health officials said. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is trying to trace the source of the outbreak, which began in September. The Department of Agriculture, state health officials and the Food and Drug Administration are also involved. Only Ohio state health officials have agreed to have their state named as one of those affected, with an estimated 50 cases.

reuters.com — A federal judge set a trial for early next year for five Blackwater security guards accused of killing 14 unarmed civilians in a 2007 shooting in Baghdad that strained U.S.-Iraqi relations. The judge scheduled jury selection to begin on January 29 of next year after the five defendants formally entered a not guilty plea to the charges over the shooting that also injured 20 Iraqis. The shooting occurred as the private security firm's guards escorted a heavily armed four-truck convoy of U.S. diplomats through Baghdad on September 16, 2007. The guards, U.S. military veterans, were responding to a car bombing when shooting erupted in a crowded intersection.

money.cnn.com — A U.S. court upheld the convictions of former Enron Corp President and Chief Executive Jeffrey Skilling related to his role in the collapse of the energy trading company, but said he must be resentenced. The ruling, handed down by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans, said the lower court erred when applying federal sentencing guidelines, so the executive could now receive a shorter sentence. Skilling who was convicted along with former Chairman Kenneth Lay in May 2006 on conspiracy and fraud changes, is serving a 24-year term at a minimum security prison in Colorado.
